Master the correct setup and administration of a Linux server by configuring one at home and implementing a network monitoring system on a Raspberry Pi.
Where did you create this artifact?
This artifact was created during the course work in my Linux system and network administration course.
What did you learn?
Throughout this course we learned things from the basics of setting up a Linux server to working with the file structure within a Linux system. We also learned how to set up Linux as a DHCP server, firewall, and other important networking equipment.
How did you learn this?
Most of the skills were learned by a combination of reading and practical work. For the graduate students in this course it also culminated in a graduate project showing and understanding of the work that was completed during the semester.
What were some challenges that you overcame?
One of the largest challenges I faced in this course was trying to remember the commands within Linux. While most of the common commands are simple to remember, and are used often, it is the options for each of these commands that are difficult to remember. I got very accustomed to using the man pages for commands to try and remember everything usable for different commands.
How will you apply this information in the future?
As someone who works in Information security, using Linux is important as some of the best assessment tools are available only on Linux. This includes complete operating systems designed for assessments and testing.
In this file, I show the steps that I completed to setup not only a Raspberry Pi, but include log management software on it for my home network.
