Cultivate a mindset focused on designing a High-Availability environment for an enterprise network.
Where did you create this artifact?
This artifact was created during the course ICT 701 – Information & Communication Technologies in Organizations. This wa1s the result of a semester long research project.
What did you learn?
Throughout this research project, I learned many things. First, the importance of creating redundancy in networks within an enterprise system. But it does not just stop there, while all I looked at for this project was the physical network redundancy, there are other things that need to be considered when looking to implement high-availability (HA) within an enterprise. For instance, are there redundant servers that can take over should one fail, or what about drives on those servers?
How did you learn this?
While some of the information was taken from my current place of employment, and research completed to submit recommendations and assist in planning of creating HA within the network. I also began working on a personal project to create an HA environment within my own personal home network. Between researching parts, servers, costs, time commitments, and other ancillary costs that could affect the timing, and rollout of such networks, I learned that there are many ways to create these types of environments.
What were some challenges that you overcame?
Besides the time needed to complete the research paper, along with working a full-time job, and projects being worked on within that job, the largest challenge to overcome was getting all the parts to build out my home network. Making sure I got the right combination of equipment, and getting things started, running, and operating properly took a bit more than I originally anticipated.
How will you apply this information in the future?
I will take everything that I learned not only in this course, but from the research and independent work completed for this course and apply it not only to my current job, but also to any future jobs that may need the skills learned throughout the course. Being able to look at network diagrams and understand how to add and create redundancy is a key skill in several IT positions.
This is a snippet of the research paper I completed for this course. It shows a look at the comparisons completed in a real world project.
